چکیده

The urine-marking, defecation rates, and urine-sniffing behavior of male and female degus (Octodon degus) were recorded in an open field whose substrate was clean (Control Tests) or covered in conspecific urine (Experimental Tests). Animals were exposed to these conditions intermittently over a 3-mo period. Males urine-marked more than females. Both sexes exhibited increased levels of urine-marking and defecation during Control Tests as time passed. Males showed decreased urine-marking and defecation rates when exposed to the urine of conspecific males, but no changes in these behaviors with female urine. Females increased urinemarking rates when exposed to female urine, but exhibited no changes with male urine. The results are discussed with reference to degu social organization and the factors influencing scent-marking behavior.

Odor-specific effects on reentrainment following phase advances in the diurnal rodent, Octodon degus.

Reentrainment following phase shifts of the light-dark (LD) cycle is accelerated in Octodon degus in the presence of olfactory social cues (i.e., odors) produced by conspecifics. However, not all odors from conspecifics were effective in facilitating reentrainment after a phase advance. In the current experiments, we examined whether nonanimal odors, odors from another species, or conspecific o...

Gonadal hormone effects on entrained and free-running circadian activity rhythms in the developing diurnal rodent Octodon degus.

The slowly maturing, long-lived rodent Octodon degus (degu) provides a unique opportunity to examine the development of the circadian system during adolescence. These studies characterize entrained and free-running activity rhythms in gonadally intact and prepubertally gonadectomized male and female degus across the first year of life to clarify the impact of sex and gonadal hormones on the cir...

Wheel-running and rest activity pattern interaction in two octodontids (Octodon degus, Octodon bridgesi).

Wheel-running and other non-photic stimuli influence the rest-activity pattern of diurnal and nocturnal mammals. A day to night inversion of phase preference of activity was described among Octodon degus, when exposed to ad-libitum wheel running. We have studied the rest-activity pattern response in presence of ad libitum wheel-running in wild-captured male individuals from two species of genus...

Early Olfactory Environment Influences Social Behaviour in Adult Octodon degus

We evaluated the extent to which manipulation of early olfactory environment can influence social behaviours in the South American Hystricognath rodent Octodon degus. The early olfactory environment of newborn degus was manipulated by scenting all litter members with eucalyptol during the first month of life. The social behaviour of sexually mature animals (5-7 months old) towards conspecifics ...
